Fashion seems to be an industry that everyone wishes to be involved in but the harsh reality is that not everyone is cut out for it. However, that isn't the case for Philadelphia native and fashion connoisseur, Tash Banks. This past Thursday, I had the opportunity to pick the brain of one of Philadelphia's most sought after fashion stylist. With her warm personality and honest dialogue, I was able to capture the heart and passion that Banks has for fashion.
What Are 5 Beauty Products You Can’t Live Without?
Tash Banks: What if I tell you that I don't use beauty products? I don't [personally] really use beauty products because I let my makeup artist use beauty products on me.
Me: Are there any makeup styles that you gravitate towards?
Tash Banks: I like a bold eye and nude lip. I literally just started getting into that because I'm usually scared to just jump into colors.
MakeUp or No Makeup?
Tash Banks: It's in-between because some times I'll do a tomboy look or an outfit that includes a hat with sunglasses so I don't really like to do makeup for those looks. I do feel like there is a time and a place for makeup. If I'm going to an event, I want to make sure that I have my make up done.
Top 3 Instagram Accounts You Follow?
Tash Banks: Ok, I like June Ambrose (@JuneAmbrose), Fashion Bomb Daily (@fashionbombdailymag), and Rihanna (@badgalriri) of course.
Me: Yes! I feel like she [Rihanna] can do no wrong! So let me ask you, how did you feel about her outfit for the Met Gala?
Tash Banks: I thought she wore the perfect outfit. That crown fits the queen.
Me: Listen, she is the pope of this game.
Tash Banks: Absolutely! Everybody else is just a guest. She stole the show and didn't even come late!
When Did You Know Fashion Was Your Niche?
Tash Banks: When I was in 7th grade, I cut up my shirt and put the scraps around my arms as bracelets. People knew I was just trying to be creative but now [when I look back], I looked a mess.
Your Staple Clothing Item?
Tash Banks: Its crazy because lately I've been tying to find different things to do but I always go back to a t-shirt and boyfriend jeans. It saves the day!
Me: Yes! It's so comfortable!
Tash Banks: Yeah, I feel like a t-shirt and boyfriend jeans goes with any shoe you want. You can do sneakers or heels, the ball is in your court. You can pair your boyfriend jeans with plain t-shirts, graphic tees, or even vintage tees.
On An Off Day, What Do You Do For Fun?
Tash Banks: I go downtown and I window shop.
Tash Banks: Yeah! I don't live far from Center City and I'll get on my bike and I'll ride downtown and window shop. I put outfits together in my head and when I get the money, I buy the items I like.
At What Moment Did You Feel Like You Were On The Right Track?
Tash Banks: When I had a conversation with my coworker and my friend. I told them that people kept coming to me for style advice and they both told me that I should become a stylist. I knew that I needed to build my confidence so I started reading a lot of magazines and I started watching E! News.
What Advice Do You Have For People Trying To Find Their Unique Fashion Style?
Tash Banks: Make sure you have the confidence to be yourself and make sure you have the confidence to wear anything. When you get to that point, you can do whatever you want! Find the self love that you need to get you through any situation. You HAVE to love yourself. I've spent a lot of time by myself, I don't have a boyfriend because I wanted to spend time alone to find what I loved. Sometimes we need to just thank God for waking us up and then take advantage of the 24 hours ahead of you.
Me: That's right! You can't expect God to bless what you don't invest in.
Tash Banks: Right! Every moment is a gift. I've lost people that are close to me but you can't get caught up in the things that you no longer have. Work hard and then look at the gifts that comes to you as a result of your hard work. Everything you've experienced like hurt, pain, etc. will pay off in the end .
The Greatest Advice In Life You’ve Received?
Tash Banks: I would say, never give up and never stop being yourself. I actually had an ex-boyfriend that I absolutely loved tell me that. Unfortunately, we ended up not working out but he encouraged me to continue to be myself. Just because what we had didn't work doesn't mean that I'm flawed.
People will always try to attack you-- I say that because I feel that people attack me on social media all the time but that doesn't mean they're right or wrong. It's there opinion and they're entitled to their opinion but that shouldn't stop me from being me.
Me: That right! Be yourself!
Tash Banks: Yes and don't change yourself for anyone. I have friends that I don't hang with everyday but when we do hangout, it's all love. When we are together, nothing seems different in our relationship because they love me for me.
What Advice Do You Have For Upcoming Fashion Influencers?
Tash Banks: Never hesitate to ask questions. People are so engrossed in "bougie-k'ers", who are people that have thousands of followers and then disregard others in the same industry with less followers. I don't ever want to be like that. If you have questions, feel free to ask me! I attend almost every event that I can in this city and it's not about their popularity, it's because I want to grow as a stylist and network. I sometimes follow and draw inspiration from people who only have 10 followers on social media because I genuinely like their style. I would recommend people to get over their fears and attend events but don't be shy and in a bubble. Network, talk, connect with those who are there with you. Networking will help you to get to the levels you want because you can't do it while being in your comfort zone. I'm about to go into this event and talk to a large group of women, I'm nervous but I can't mature being afraid.
I had such an amazing time chatting it up with Tash. If you want to see more of whats going on in the world of Tash Banks, follow her on Instagram at @_TashBanks , you won't be disappointed!
